This 5-session bootcamp will ensure that forensic nurses and healthcare providers improve awareness and become familiar with screening techniques to identify patients being trafficked for sex, labor, organ harvesting, and all other forms of trafficking. Participants will be able to recognize symptoms of trafficking, create effective community response systems, and develop trauma-informed models of care for trafficked patients.

This session is geared toward law enforcement, forensic nurses, and emergency department / healthcare providers. William Smock, MD, the Louisville Metro Police Department's Police Surgeon, presents a unique forensic program specifically designed for forensic nurses and law enforcement officers involved with the investigation, evaluation, and reconstruction of firearms-related incidents, including domestic and officer-involved shootings.

FORENSIC & MEDICAL EVALUATION OF "CHOKEHOLD" PATIENTS

Presented by Dr. William Smock

When a patient presents with a history of having been “strangled,” “choked,” or placed in a “chokehold” or “vascular neck restraint,” the medical provider must understand the importance of providing an appropriate medical and radiographic evaluation. In this presentation, William Smock, MD of the Louisville Metro Police Department explores the medical evaluation and forensic examination of the patient who has experienced a vascular neck restraint, including a review of case studies.

PHOTOGRAPHY BASICS BOOTCAMP

This workshop focuses on basic forensic photography skills needed for the documentation of bodily injuries for victims of sexual assault, intimate partner violence, child physical and sexual abuse, and elder abuse. It is designed to increase basic photography skills, knowledge, and competence for healthcare professionals, specifically forensic nurses.
